BT plan to disconnect the phone in the box because it is rarely used.

Local school girl Molly True wants to save the red telephone box in the centre of Helme from the scrap heap.

She has presented a petition to the Holme Valley North area committee signed by most local residents.

BT plan to disconnect the phone in the box because it is rarely used.

However Helme is a conservation area and residents think the old style red box is part of the fabric of the village.

Cllr David Woodhead, Lib Dem chair of the area committee, supports the residents.

He said

'We may not need the phone but the box is part of our heritage. I have asked our conservation officers to see if we can do a deal with BT to save this box - and perhaps others. I am sure the residents of Helme would be happy to take care of this symbol of the village.'
