ROAD SURFACE PETITION LAUNCHED

11.59.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 16th Jun 2008

A petition calling on Kirklees to resurface roads in the Lakes area of Moldgreen and Dalton has been launched this week. Dalton Ward Councillors Roger Battye and Rochelle Parchment (Liberal Democrat) are responding to the concerns of local people over the crumbling road surfaces. It is feared that the potholed surface marked with collapsing sections due to utility works could make the area more dangerous for pedestrians and motorists.

Cllr Roger Battye says:

"I am very concerned about the current state of the roads in the Lakes. Years of patch up works is coming apart at the seams leaving the roads marked with pot holes and collapsed areas. The uneven road surface presents a greater safety risk to residents. There's both a greater risk that some might trip on a raised section while crossing the roads or even be hit by a speeding driver when the catch an unexpected pothole. I've also see drivers swerving around potholes to try and prevent damage which increases chances of a head on collision".

Cllr Parchment says:

"I've only been elected a short time but have been aware of a growing problem for a while. Since becoming a councillor the state of the roads is something people living in the Lakes have raised with me on a regular basis. We're hoping to gather a great deal of resident support via the petition before presenting it to the council at a future meeting at the Town Hall."
